This rating is more so for the fact that I purchased a NEW book and the one I received had writing in it already - not for the actual content itself. At first I saw only 1 page, but as I started skimming through there were more pages that were filled already. I tried to erase them so I can learn the exercises on my own but the writing wouldn't come off easily at all. I'm pretty upset at this. Books are not cheap!!!!!!Product details

"the language of medicene" is a very well written text with great pictures. illustrations are shown in extreme clarity with very well written explenations- no guess work as to exactly what you are looking at and nothing shown that you don't need. everything is explained in highly understandable terms. you don't really need an expanded knowledge in anatomy and physiology to understand this text. i believe that anyone with a general high school biology knowledge would do just fine. everything is explained clearly in laymans terms. i have had a few texts similar to this in the past and this one by far was much easier to understand. i highly suggest this text over many other terminology books. if you can get a copy that comes with a cd it is actually pretty cool. spelling bee vocabulary and terminology, graphical matching and terminology matching are just a few examples of studying guides that the cd has to offer. there are games like "million dollar pyramid", "wheel of terminology" and more in the "arcade" section. there really are more study aids on the cd than i can mention. if you get a copy definatly don't pass up the cd!
This book is the best of the best. Very easy to understand all terminology and procedures without having to search for more info elsewhere. I loved that it always gives you at the end of the chapter a mini quiz to reinforce everything on the chapter. It comes with a CD which makes it a lot easier to learn the terminology. I used it for all of my classes even if it was not a required book because it has lot of information that can help you on other Medical classes you might take.
The book is in excellent conditions and it comes with the CD. I was a bit concern when I placed my order thinking the what if it doesn't arrive on time but I'm so happy I went for it. Delivery was fast and I'm a happy camper. I recommend this book to everybody in the medical field.
GOOD The book follows a logical order and reinforces information with extensive exercises. It contains a lot of pictures and diagrams to visualize the information. The book definitely serves its purpose, especially if you're preparing to sit for the RMT exam.
BAD The CD-Rom contains a ridiculous amount of errors. The field of medicine requires accuracy, no matter what your position or career is in it, including authors and publishers of medical books. If you pay attention to the book and consider the CD-Rom to be purely for your review and enjoyment then you'll likely be able to turn a blind eye to the errors, but if you're relying on the CD-Rom to give accurate information, such as definitions (which is where most of the errors are), then you'll be sorely disappointed with it. Here are 3 examples from the 4th chapter definitions on the CD-Rom
1. Hyperglycemia Condition of excessive or high blood pressure; diabetes mellitus. [Hyperglycemia is excessive sugar in the bloodstream, not excessive blood pressure.]
2. Hypoglycemia High levels of sugar in the bloodstream; diabetes mellitus. [Hypo- means below or less than, not high or greater than.]
3. Diameter Measurement between opposite for example, blood vessel or intestine) points on the periphery of a circular body part (for example, blood vessel or intestine). [Yup, that's for real.]
I'd rate the book 5 stars but the CD-Rom 1 star.
I am a 72-year-old woman with absolutely no medical background whatsoever, recently diagnosed with an immune deficiency. The immunologist provided me, after each consultation, with a sheaf of notes from the session and with blood test results. I could read not one single bit of these reports with understanding. So I hit the computer. Wikipedia was a little helpful, but not nearly graphic enough. Then I ordered from a third-grade book on blood and a junior high text on the immune system, both of which posed more questions than answers. Finally I ordered the Chabner book, eighth edition, and it is a revelation!
A thousand pages, big type, wide margins, LOTS of every kind of photo, picture and diagram imaginable -- my kind of learning! To my amazement, I can understand and remember every single word I've read so far. The author has a rare gift for simplifying and illustrating what might be really technical and (for me) obscure. As a former classroom teacher myself, I salute the author and thank her for her brilliant clarity. I envy her students. A most illuminating and enjoyable book, I have begun studying and learning the whole contents -- just for the pleasure of it.
Most of the people who read "The Language of Medicine" are probably young, and they are taking a class in medical terminology as part of preparation for a career in health care. My situation is very different.
I am 80. As a patient, I have an urgent need to get a good overview of the field of medicine quickly, so that I will be able to get better service from doctors. "The Language of Medicine" is ideal for this purpose.
There is a shorter version of this book called "Medical Terminology A Short Course". I finished all the tests in the book and on the CD, and now I am half way through "The Language of Medicine".
It is useful to have a good medical dictionary while working through "The Language of Medicine". The one I use is Mosby's "Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions". When you buy a medical dictionary, make sure the dictionary contains the etymology for all words, so that you can identify the morphemes contained within long medical words. Chabner's book relies heavily on assembling long medical words from prefixes, combining forms and suffixes. I think of it as the "tinker toy" approach to medical language. It works for me. Probably it will work for you too.
